Considered Confucius' birthday, Teacher's Day is celebrated in Taiwan on September 28th each year. Confucius was a philosopher, and is considered one of the greatest scholars in Chinese history.  On Teacher’s Day, Confucian temples hold special ceremonies in his honor.  Children also give cards and small gifts to their teachers to show their appreciation of the work their teachers do.

If you get a chance to visit Tainan, you can visit the first Confucian temple in Taiwan.

Ghost Month PDF Print E-mail

The Chinese, like many other ancient cultures, follow the lunar calendar.  A lunar calendar is a calendar that is based on cycles of the moon phase. The current year in the Chinese calendar is the Year of the Earth Rat (Wu4 Zi). It lasts from 7-Feb-2008 to 25-Jan-2009.

The fifteenth night of the seventh month of the lunar calendar marks the start of a traditional Chinese festival and holiday called the Ghost Festival (Zhong1 Yuan2 Jie2 中元節) and the seventh month is generally regarded as the Ghost Month.  It is believed that during the seventh lunar month ghosts and spirits, including those of the deceased ancestors, come out from the "lower realm".
